Frequently Asked Qusetions
What is an alpaca?
Alpacas are members of the camelid family consisting of camels, vicunas, llamas, and guanaco. They originated in the South American countries of Chili, Peru, and Bolivia, where they have been domesticated for over 6,000 years for their meat and fiber. However, in the United States Alpacas are in demand solely for their lustrous fiber.
Alpacas do not have hooves on their feet. Instead, they have pads similar to a dog. Additionally, Alpacas do not have top teeth; instead they have a hard gum that is used for chewing. These two characteristics make alpacas very easy on the pasture they reside on.
What types of alpacas are there?
There are two primary types of alpacas, the Huacaya, pictured here looks like a fluffy teddy bear. The Suri has pencil shaped locks.
What type of care is required for alpacas?
Alpacas require little care compared to many farm animals. They graze on hay and grass that is supplemented by a small amount of grain. 5 to 10 alpacas can live on a one acre parcel. Besides annual shearing and semi-monthly vaccinations, these gently creatures require little else from their owners.
Alpacas tend to have a couple of “communal dung piles.” This helps to simplify keeping their living area clean. Their bean shaped dung has very low acidity and makes excellent composting material.
How long does an Alpaca live?
Alpacas generally live 18 to 20 years. They become sexually mature between 2 and 3 years of age and produce a single baby (cria) approx. 335 days after conception. It is not uncommon for a female to continue to produce quality crias up to the age of 17 and even older.
What are the fiber characteristics of an alpaca?
Alpacas come in 22 different colors. The fiber is strong, hypoallergenic and “breathes” well. This makes them warmer than wool and as soft as cashmere.
Do alpaca’s spit like a camel does?
Alpacas do spit. It is their only means of defense. However, alpacas generally only spit at predators and each other. When a female alpaca spits at a male, it is usually the first indication that they are pregnant.
